de Kooning Collages

Assignment Description
The students are asked to examine two paintings; one from theRenaissance and one from the Modernist movement. The students are to first distill the painting into a two dimensional collage that explains the palette and hierarchy of form and color in the composition. The materials are paper from a magazine, color aid scraps or other coloredpaper options. The next exercise is to distill the paintings into a collage that uses "authentic materials"; real pieces of wood, rubber, plastic that are found in the world to explain the composition in terms of actual materials. The final step is to take the paintings and the collages and design a room that uses the compositional ideas. The students are to produce one perspective sketch of the designs they execute.
